NEW NAME, SAME MISSION

We are proud to introduce the Cancer Support Community Central Ohio, formerly The Wellness Community Central Ohio.

As the number of cancer survivors in the United States surpasses 12 million, the demand for support services throughout the continuum of care is increasing. Our newly-named Cancer Support Community (CSC) is poised to help meet these needs through our innovative and comprehensive offerings to all people affected by cancer.

These offerings include a comprehensive menu of personalized and essential emotional and social support services, including support groups, education and healthy lifestyle programs. In 2007, the Institute of Medicine issued a groundbreaking report, Cancer Care for the Whole Patient, advancing the central idea that social and emotional support are as important as medical care in the face of cancer diagnosis.

In coming years, with the aging of 76 million baby-boomers, the number of cancer cases will increase dramatically. Yet today, more people are living with-and fewer are dying from-cancer than ever before. With rapid advances in screening and treatment technologies, cancer is becoming more a chronic condition than a terminal illness. This is why the Cancer Support Community's programs are so vital: Research continues to show that social and emotional support are critical components of complete cancer care. The Cancer Support community provides people with the skills and resources they need to play an active role in their cancer care and to optimize the quality of their lives. And we provide this kind of support to everyone who is affected by the disease-not only cancer patients, but also their family and friends.

Our grassroots programs deliver a comprehensive array of personalized services to cancer survivors, families and caregivers. Because cancer knows no boundaries, our goal is to be everywhere we are needed, and partner with a wide variety of organizations that includes community-based organizations, hospitals, community physicians, and health care professionals, hospitals, and other nonprofit s. We are a community united so no one faces cancer alone, we are a whole community behind them.
