Q:
Why a community for people facing cancer?
Sometimes, surrounded by loving and caring
people, you can still feel alone with cancer.  At
The Wellness Community (TWC) there is a vibrant
network of people committed to supporting one
another and sharing what they have learned from
their experience.  Our goal is to create a home-
like environment with easy access to information
and activities that can help people connect with
each other.  It can make a difference to be with
others who understand.

Q:
How do The Wellness Community’s programs
reduce stress?
Through our evidence-based programs that are
designed to provide support, education and hope,
The Wellness reduces stress for individuals with
cancer and their loved ones. This strengthens the
immune system, and helps people with cancer
cope with both their disease and the side effects
of treatment.

Q:
Do participants follow a specific program?
People with cancer and their loved ones can
choose from a variety of groups, educational
workshops, exercise and mind/body programs

Q:
How does The Wellness Community work with
medical teams?
The Wellness Community complements
conventional medical treatment by providing
strategies to enhance participants’ health and well-
being.  The medical community recognizes TWC
as a valuable resource for people with cancer and
their loved ones.  “Combing the will of the patient
with the skill of the physician – a powerful
combination.”

Q:
Can support people come even if the person
with cancer doesn’t want to?
Yes!  We have specific groups solely for family
and friends of the person with cancer, sharing
experiences, learning how to support the person
with cancer, and take care of themselves.
Support people are welcome to attend other
programs such as educational workshops, stress
management programs, exercise and nutrition
classes.

attend other programs?
Yes!  While support groups can be very helpful

HISTORY

The Wellness Community was founded by Dr.
Harold Benjamin in Santa Monica, California in
1982. As a result of experience with his wife's
breast cancer and through subsequent years
of study on the psychological and social impact
of cancer, Dr. Benjamin formulated the Patient
Active Concept. This revolutionary idea would
be recognized years later at Walt Disney World
EPCOT Metropolitan Life exhibit as one of the
most significant developments in the evolution
of modern health care. In addition to the
Patient Active Concept, the other significant
cornerstone of our program is that all services
are provided free of charge in a home-like,
community setting.
So no one faces cancer alone
